On Friday, March 11, 2011, the 9.0-magnitude earthquake that struck the northeastern coast of Japan’s main island was only the beginning of a defining tragedy. After nearly decimating a number of coastal cities, including the 1 million-populated Sendai, a violent tsunami tore through what remained of the already devastated region.
